Anchor Compliance

Using Drone Inspection as a Pre-Survey Tool for Roof and Anchor Condition

Part of the guide Roof Anchor and Fall Protection Compliance

The short answer

A drone pre-survey is a fast way to map anchor locations and document visible roof and anchor condition, especially on large or hard-to-reach roofs. It does not replace the hands-on inspection and testing a qualified person needs to certify anchors.

What a drone can do

  • Map anchor locations against the roof plan
  • Photograph visible corrosion, damage and membrane problems around anchors
  • Document condition over time, with dated imagery
  • Survey many roofs quickly across a portfolio
  • Reduce roof trips on buildings with difficult access

What a drone cannot do

  • Test an anchor or confirm its capacity
  • Check fasteners, torque or hidden deterioration
  • Certify anything: certification requires a qualified person and scientifically valid testing

See anchor testing methods.

When a drone pre-survey makes sense

  • Before the annual inspection, to plan the inspector's time
  • Before an acquisition or refinancing. See anchor compliance in due diligence.
  • After a major storm, to spot damage before anyone goes on the roof
  • Across a portfolio, to find the buildings that need attention first

Rules and courtesy

  • Commercial drone flights in the US require a remote pilot certificate under FAA Part 107
  • Airspace near airports and some urban areas may need authorization
  • Tell tenants and neighbors before a flight over occupied buildings

Then get on the roof

Whatever the drone finds, the next step is a qualified person on the roof. Through its long-time anchor partner, S&K installs engineered anchor points and inspects, load tests and certifies existing systems, with records you can hand to ownership, insurers or auditors. Frequently asked questions

Can a drone inspect roof anchors?

A drone can photograph anchors and map their locations. It cannot test them or certify capacity, which requires a qualified person.

Do drone operators need a license?

Commercial drone flights in the US require a remote pilot certificate under FAA Part 107.

Is a drone survey cheaper than a roof inspection?

It answers a different question. A drone documents visible condition quickly. Certification still requires hands-on inspection and testing.
